In today’s fast-paced world, businesses and individuals are on the constant hunt for stream-lined and viral communication. There are formulas and antidotes for when and what to post on social media, what keywords will attract a potential lead, and how to get someone to buy into who you are or what your business is.
While strategy is critically important, the desire to speed up our interactions has potentially steered us away from the one ingredient in communication that allows us to truly connect with others and convert them into their necessary role in our lives or our company’s success.
The secret ingredient: Empathy.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. When we can empathize with other beings, whether it is in the process of closing a sale or the art of making a friend.
When we understand that we don’t have to be understood. We will begin to relate to other people more and more. Compassion, trust and genuine solutions to problems will begin to become the new norm. connecting with others own emotions and responsibilities subsequently breaks down the hard exterior of the fear of trust.
The root of human interaction is to be heard, understood, and validated. When our words activate the sensations in others such as complements, truth and directness. This launches a sense of healthy exchange and resonation, you have now created a safe space to communicate and build a relationship.
This is the 2-step process to communicating with empathy:
- Take the time to ask questions with out interruptions. Listen intently to their needs, without an agenda. Do your research. Learn as much as you can about the person or company you are communicating with PRIOR if possible.
- Be vulnerable. In order to fully connect, you need to find things in their story that you relate to, and share your own feelings and experiences. There is a sweet spot where all of our stories intertwine, and when you find and express it, you remove the separation between yourself and others.
Once you have empathized, you don’t need to stress over how you will deliver your message or make your pitch, because it will come from a genuine place, and the person or people you are communicating with will feel that. There is nothing wrong with blasting out charming content on your public platforms, as long as you practice empathetic communication in your conversations.
