How To Avoid The Domino Effect

By October 31, 2017No Comments

“If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it’s not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.”

—Dalai Lama XIV

If one or more areas of your life are under stress, build your greatness into other areas of your life. Don’t let one area infect all others. Some of us go through a breakup, personal challenges, a job crisis, or other stressful situations that can spread into other areas of our life. Our self-esteem can tumble, and our performance can diminish. The best thing you can do when some area of your life is bothering you is to take care of your other responsibilities, so the one area does not drag you down everywhere. If you choose to do positive actions when one pond of your life is a mess, this will bolster your other ponds.

Another way to look at this is being aware that you will be building a thicker skin as you take the bad, and excel in building the good at the same time. This does take awareness, practice, and constant positive action. If you keep moving forward you will see the problems that took you down will begin to diminish in their meaning and you will become more accepting of living life on life’s terms. Take on a research project, new hobby or something that can create positive excitement in your life. This will build your self-esteem.

When I started my company, I had several very big hurdles to overcome. The economy was at its worst, finance companies were pulling back or not lending, and my previous employer was using the fear of a lawsuit to stop me. I also had my personal life of raising kids, and various other responsibilities that seemed overwhelming. I stayed focused on building my company without letting the other areas of my life seep into that arena. I used the formula of positive activity to preserve and grow my self-esteem.

No matter what hit me, I challenged myself to stay focused. Any of those challenges could have easily taken me down. Action, Action, and Action allowed me to look fear right between the eyes and move forward. Embracing the activity was so strong that I was profitable every single month and was recognized as one the fastest growing independent businesses in the U.S four years in a row. All because I did not allow the domino effect to take me down. I isolated and focused on the job and hand.

  1. Be aware of what you can and can’t control. Fear will be released once you accept that some things you cannot control. If you can control something that you are having an issue with then make an action plan and keep practicing toward a resolution. If you can’t, then let it go.

  1. Put more effort into other areas in which you can excel. One or two bad things should not wipe out your day. You can take a bad situation or something you cannot control, accept this, and then go after what you excel in with all the force you have. Keep your dominos far enough apart that they don’t create a chain reaction.

  1. Accept the negative. If you don’t, then you will not know what the positive is. We are not in quicksand. But sometimes when we start to sink the momentum that carries us down can create the quicksand effect. Pull yourself up to solid ground. It is yours. There is negative and positive to almost everything. If you don’t accept the negative, then it will be replaced with the positive.

  1. Keep moving forward no matter what. Sometimes the distance we move cannot be seen and understood through our eyes. But if you always progressively move forward you will realize one day that you are creating a positive legacy.

  1. New actions create new moments. There is no such thing as a bad moment unless you label it as one. Some moments are light and some are catastrophic, but we are in charge of taking over moments with positive actions.

  1. Don’t feel like a victim. Look in the mirror and ask yourself how this type of thinking is helping you? Your answer will determine your actions. Be a leader.

  1. Help others. Maybe you can’t smile, but if you make someone else smile then chances are you will.

  1. Strength is built on challenge. Make it a competition with yourself and always try to win small victories.

  1. Don’t fight your negative thoughts. You will make them worse.

  1. Don’t just say it. Do
